In Germany, theories to confirm the concept of design, space and place of city through the guidelines of urban planning system was suggested, and new ways to upgrade the quality of occupants' life by articulating the spatial characteristics of locality were sought. As a specific alternative, a new concept of formative planning system was introduced in 1970-80s. In this study, it is intended to research the organization and operation of the District Unit Plan System to analyze the aspects found in architectural design as well as the process of urban planning. Baden-Baden and Bruchsal that were built as new residential complexes based on the architectural laws enacted after 1987 were cased-studied in detail. Ultimately this thesis aims to study the fundamental importance and role of formative planning system in the process of formulating and executing the District Unit Plan System.
